In this informal presentation I will discuss the early stages of my current anthropological fieldwork into social media and activism in Barcelona. The aim of this research is to determine what difference, if any, social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc.) are making to local activist practices and actions. In the talk I will outline my working assumptions, theoretical framework, methodology and early findings, with special reference to three social movements, namely free culture (aka digital rights), animal rights and pro-independence.
