Theorising media and practice – an update

August 13, 2008

Who needs to sleep when there’s work to be finished?

I’m desperately trying to finish the introduction to my co-edited volume (with Birgit Bräuchler) Theorising Media and Practice. Just two more part-time days to go now. In this chapter I first situate the book in relation to three main bodies of scholarship (practice theory, media theory and media anthropology). I then discuss the media anthropological uses of the ubiquitous notion of ‘practices’, a usage that makes scant reference to practice theory. After this I ask the difficult question “What is practice theory?” and try to answer it as concisely as possible. This is followed by a section on why I think we need a practice approach to media, to end with an overview of the book’s sections and chapters.

Further update: 28 August 2008, manuscript now with the publishers, see here
