The anthropology of Catalonia – a few refs

May 3, 2010

As I prepare for fieldwork on social media activism in Barcelona, Saul Mercado (Vassar College) has kindly recommended me the following titles on the anthropology of Catalonia:

Frekko, Susan. 2009. Normal in Catalonia.  In Language and Society 38:71-93.

Hargreaves, John.  2000.  Freedom for Catalonia? Cambridge: CUP.

Noyes, Dorothy. 2003.  Fire in the Placa.  Phil.:Univ. PA Press.

Woolard, Kathryn.  1989.  Double-Talk.  Stanford: SUP.

Woolard, Kathryn.  2008.  Language and Identity Choice in Catalonia.

Hargreaves, John.  2000.  Freedom for Catalonia? Cambridge: CUP.

Any further suggestions?

    Hi John,

Thanks for sharing these references. I’m looking at Catalan nationalist identity for my PhD thesis as well as some aspects of technologically mediated local/banal activism in Catalonia. Here are some general resources I’d add to the list:

GINER, S. 1984. The Social Structure Of Catalonia. The Anglo-Catalan Society Occasional Publications: University of Sheffield.

GUIBERNAU, M. 2004. Catalan Nationalism: Francoism, transition and democracy. London: Routledge.

PI-SUNYER, O. 1987. “Town, Country, and Nation: Studying Culture and Politics in Catalonia”, Anthropological Quarterly, 60(4): 167-173.

And, of course, Juris’ ‘Networking Futures’ (2008), on which you’ve already posted some detailed chapter notes.

    Fran

I forgot to mention in my last comment that the Frekko article is in ‘Language in Society’ (not Language and Society)

Not directly related to use of media, but an interesting study:

Peter Sahlins, “Boundaries; the making of France & Spain in the Pyrenees”, University of California Press, 1989

    Cheers

Thanks both for those intriguing additions! By the way, anything of interest published in Spanish, Catalan or French?

Fran, apropos local/banal activism in Catalonia – have you published any of papers or articles from your doctoral work?
